Batik Tulis Evening Bag

Sale Price: $70.00 Original Price: $140.00

Wearable art, drawn by hand in wax and finished in beads.

This evening bag is made from batik tulis, an Indonesian fabric drawn entirely by hand. In an olive and forest green palette with touches of soft blue, cream, and gold, flowers, vines, and curling tendrils spread across the envelope flap and the pleated, channel-stitched body. Hand-embellished bead work and sequins pick out the blooms and butterfly motifs in glimmering green and gold, so the whole bag catches the light the way an evening bag should.

The word “tulis” means “written” in Indonesian, and batik tulis is just that, a cloth written in wax. An artisan draws the design by hand with a canting, a small copper pen with a spout that trails hot wax like ink, and the cloth is then dyed so that only the unwaxed areas take the color. The process is repeated for each color, and a single cloth can take weeks or even months to complete.

Batik was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 2 October 2009, and Indonesia celebrates National Batik Day each year on that date. Because every line is drawn by hand, no two cloths are ever exactly alike, and the small natural variations in the lines and dots are the signature of the artisan’s hand.

Carry it as an envelope clutch, or wear it with the shoulder strap for hands-free evenings. It is a perfect size at 11" by 8" for a phone, wallet, keys, and lipstick, and it makes an unforgettable accent for dinners, weddings, holiday parties, and nights out.
