This Rose Medallion covered tureen is hand-painted in the classic Canton export tradition — alternating panels of court figures in elaborate dress, pink roses and peonies, butterflies, and dense floral vignettes, all anchored by the signature rose medallion at center. Gilt accents rim the edges and punctuate the scrollwork borders. The domed lid is topped with a flower bud finial, painted with the same all-over decoration as the base.
Rose Medallion was produced for Western export beginning in the early 19th century and has been avidly collected ever since. It belongs on a table as much as it does in a cabinet.
