Green & Gold Peony and Songbird Porcelain

$70.00
Sold Out

Spring, painted in gold and kept in bloom.

Some plates are meant to be eaten from, and some are meant to be looked at. This one is a showpiece, with a deep olive green border that glitters with golden scrollwork and a fine gilt lattice, framing peonies in pink and lavender and songbirds in blue and russet. At the center, a bird swoops among the blossoms on flowering branches, and four shaped cartouches around the rim repeat the garden, each one a small painting of its own. Black and gold diamonds finish the edge, and the whole plate seems to glow.

Japanese porcelain makers have decorated plates with birds, blossoms, and gold for centuries, and Western homes have prized them since the 17th century. In Asian decorative arts, the peony is the flower of prosperity and good fortune, and birds among blossoms stand for joy, so a plate like this is as lucky as it is lovely. It was made in Japan in the early 1980s.

At 10.25", it’s the size that anchors a plate wall, holds its own on a mantel or a sideboard on a stand, and sits just right against a collection of chinoiserie, bird and floral, or green and gold porcelain. The rich green looks wonderful against white walls, deep blue, and warm wood alike.

Pairs beautifully with the Vintage Blue Danube Salad Plates, also available in the shop. Together, they're the makings of a table with a story to tell. Complete the look with our Indigo Piazza Table Cloth and Bordeaux Block Print Napkins.
