Founded in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Griffen, Smith & Hill produced their celebrated Etruscan Majolica line from 1879 to 1890, a period widely considered the golden era of American majolica. Their work is collected internationally, sought after by serious majolica collectors for the quality of their relief modeling and the subtlety of their glazework — characteristics that set them apart from their contemporaries on both sides of the Atlantic.
This 11.5" x 7.5" leaf-form platter is a beautiful example of everything that made them great. The surface is sculpted in overlapping leaves and delicate ferns, the relief work precise and naturalistic, with soft pink floral accents tucked at the handles and along the rim. The green glaze moves from deep teal at the outer edges to a lighter, almost celadon center — blended by hand, never mechanical. Loop handles complete the form.
Over 135 years old. No chips, cracks, or crazing.
