Sèvres-Style Butterfly Porcelain Urn

$600.00

A garden in full flight, standing two feet tall.

This is a piece with presence. A tall, graceful urn with a swelling body and a slender neck rises from a gilded pedestal to a domed lid with a sculptural gold finial. The porcelain is painted in a soft powder blue and white, with swags of pink, coral, and lavender blossoms drifting across the shoulders and delicate green leaves trailing among them. And everywhere, butterflies, in amber, rose, and violet, flutter across the white belly of the urn as if the garden had just been disturbed. Narrow bands of tiny flowers frame the neck and the foot, and the lid carries the same painted garden.

The base is as lavish as the urn above it. A fluted blue collar and a gilded rim lead to a scrolling, rococo foot, raised in gold and white, with a blue band of blossoms and four scrolled feet. And here is what makes it special: every element is porcelain, from the lid and the sculptural finial to the pedestal and the feet. All of the gold is gilding painted onto the porcelain, so the piece has an unbroken, sculptural quality from top to bottom.

It’s made in the Sèvres style, a tradition that began at the French royal porcelain manufactory in the 18th century, when colored grounds, painted flowers, and lavish gilding became the height of fashion. Sèvres’s celebrated turquoise “bleu céleste” was introduced in 1753 and was notoriously expensive to make, and large covered urns in blue, painted with flowers and gilded, became the centerpieces of mantels and salons across Europe. This one carries on that tradition with a lighter, softer blue and a delightful swarm of butterflies, which have long stood for joy and transformation.

At 25" tall and 8" at its widest, it’s made to command a space. Place it on a mantel, a console, or a sideboard, at the end of a long hall, or at the center of a dining table. It’s a showstopper on its own.

Tucked inside every set, a little something for first time Tavola customers — a hand-finished vintage passport notebook. Note the piece, the moment, the person you gave it to. One day these pieces will sit in someone else's hands — and they'll know it came from yours.
