Vintage Bordallo Pinheiro Grapevine Pedestal Dish, 8"

A little pedestal for something special.

This vintage Bordallo Pinheiro pedestal dish is a study in leaves. Overlapping, embossed grapevine leaves ring the top of the dish in a deeply veined, ruffled border, with a stippled band of grape clusters tucked into the edge and the scalloped rim. The center is left clean and open, a glossy field of soft celadon green, and the whole dish sits on a rich, deep emerald pedestal foot. The two-tone green is classic Bordallo Pinheiro, with a glaze that pools and deepens in the grooves of every leaf.

Bordallo Pinheiro was founded in 1884 in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, a celebrated artist and caricaturist often considered Portugal’s first comics creator. He is the creator of Zé Povinho, a beloved character who stands for the everyday Portuguese working man. The factory he founded became known for its nature-inspired majolica, from the famous cabbage leaf tableware to grapevine, geranium, and holly designs, and the brand’s frog mark has been a sign of Portuguese ceramic artistry ever since.

At 8", this pedestal dish has just the right scale for a small cake or tart, macarons, cookies, or a pile of fresh figs or grapes. It lifts a tablescape to a new level, adds height to a sideboard or a coffee table, and does just as well on a vanity as a statement catchall.
