Vintage Famille Rose & Imari-Style Porcelain Plates
Four plates, four little worlds, each painted by hand.
These vintage cabinet plates share a lush, jewel-toned sensibility, with hand-painted scenes, gilt accents, and raised enamel detailing you can see catch the light and feel under your fingertips. At 10.5", they are the ideal size for a plate wall, a mantel on stands, or layering as a statement charger beneath a bowl.
Each is marked on the reverse in red enamel with the characters for "Da Qing Tongzhi Nian Zhi," meaning "made in the Tongzhi era of the Great Qing." The reign mark is a long-held tradition in Chinese porcelain, naming the emperor's era on the base as a signature of quality. The Tongzhi reign (1862 to 1874) is remembered as a time of renewal for the Jingdezhen kilns, which were rebuilding after years of upheaval.
Choose from four designs:
Famille Rose Swallows & Lotus — Two pink swallows in flight above blooming lotus and reeds, framed by a border of peaches, peonies, and pale blue blossoms in the soft, painterly palette of famille rose, finished with a gilt rim. In Chinese tradition, peaches symbolize longevity and lotus stands for purity.
Imari Chrysanthemum — A rich palette of rust red, soft celadon, and gold, with a scalloped central cartouche of peonies surrounded by white and coral chrysanthemums and scrolling gilt foliage. The Imari style takes its name from the Japanese port through which Arita porcelain was shipped to Europe beginning in the 17th century, and it has been a collector favorite ever since.
Famille Rose Cobalt Pine & Plum — Deep cobalt blue set against white reserves of pine boughs and plum blossoms, with famille rose peonies in pink and gilt, framed by a blue lattice border. Pine and plum are both symbols of endurance, blooming and thriving through the coldest season.
Famille Rose Butterfly & Bird — A plumed bird among peonies on a saturated blue ground, encircled by a wide border of hand-painted butterflies in famille rose enamels. In Chinese decorative arts, butterflies are associated with joy and long life.
Tucked inside every order, a little something for first time Tavola customers — a hand-finished vintage passport notebook. Note the piece, the moment, the person you gave it to. One day these pieces will sit in someone else's hands — and they'll know it came from yours.
