Vintage Rose Canton Famille Rose Plates, 8.25"
These vintage 8.25" plates are hand-painted in the Rose Canton pattern, a lush, jewel-toned garden of pink peonies, butterflies, and fruit, set in panels around a central medallion. Rose pink and leafy green dominate, with accents of yellow, blue, and coral red. Coral red lattice cartouches radiate from the center, and a Greek key border and gilt rim frame the whole design.
Rose Canton belongs to the famille rose family of Chinese export porcelain. Famille rose is French for “pink family,” a name given in the 19th century to porcelain whose main color is rose pink, with white, green, yellow, and sometimes blue enamels in supporting roles. The three patterns of the family are Rose Medallion, Rose Mandarin, and Rose Canton, the last of which features panels of birds, fruits, or flowers with no human figures. That makes Rose Canton a pure garden, a decorative scene without a single figure and with nature at center stage. Butterflies in Chinese decorative arts are associated with joy and long life, and peonies with prosperity, so these plates are as auspicious as they are beautiful.
Because every plate is painted by hand, no two are exactly alike. The shades of pink, green, and gold vary from plate to plate, and each has its own personality. Please look closely at the photos, as vintage hand-painted pieces can show paint loss, and feel free to send us any questions. We are always happy to help.
At this size, they are the perfect scale for a tight plate wall, a grouping on stands across a mantel or bookshelf, or layered under a bowl for a touch of color on a display table. These plates are for decorative purposes only and are not intended for food use.
