Vintage Rose Canton & Rose Medallion Famille Rose Plates, 10"
A garden in full bloom, painted plate by plate.
These vintage 10" plates are hand-painted in the famille rose palette, a lush, jewel-toned world of pink peonies, butterflies, and birds, set in panels around a central medallion. Rose pink and leafy green dominate, with accents of yellow, blue, and coral red, all framed by scrolling borders and a gilt rim.
Famille rose is French for “pink family,” a name given in the 19th century to porcelain whose main color is rose pink, with white, green, yellow, and sometimes blue enamels in supporting roles. The three patterns of the family are Rose Medallion, Rose Mandarin, and Rose Canton, and two of them are here. Rose Medallion pairs a central medallion with panels of Chinese figures, flowers, and birds, and it took off in the 1850s, when European and American buyers wanted more of this colorful Chinese export porcelain. Rose Canton keeps panels of birds, fruits, and flowers and leaves the figures out, a pure garden with nature at center stage. Butterflies in Chinese decorative arts are associated with joy and long life, and peonies with prosperity, so these plates are as auspicious as they are beautiful.
Because every plate is painted by hand, no two are exactly alike. The shades of pink, green, and gold vary from plate to plate, and each has its own personality. Please look closely at the photos, as vintage hand-painted pieces can show paint loss, and feel free to send us any questions. We are always happy to help.
Beautiful on a plate wall, on stands across a mantel or sideboard, or layered under a bowl for a touch of color on a display table. These plates are for decorative purposes only and are not intended for food use.
Choose your pattern:
Rose Canton — peonies, butterflies, and birds in four garden panels, with no figures, 8 available
Rose Medallion — Chinese figures in courtly interiors alternating with panels of peonies, fruit, and birds around a central medallion
