Vintage Rose Medallion Bowl, 14"

$600.00

Every inch of this bowl was painted to be looked at.

At 14" across and 6.5" deep, this Rose Medallion bowl has the presence of a true centerpiece, and the interior rewards a long look. At the center, a roundel holds a pink peony in full bloom, with two long-tailed birds moving through a tangle of blossoms. Around it, small round and lobed reserves repeat the garden in miniature. The well of the bowl opens into four large panels, with two courtly scenes alternating with two garden panels. In the scenes, ladies and attendants gather in a red-latticed pavilion, with fans in hand, on a patterned tile terrace. In the garden panels, peonies, songbirds, and butterflies drift through a soft thicket of leaves. A ground of green scrollwork and gilt ties it all together.

Then there is the rim, where this bowl does something unexpected. Between the panels sit shaped cartouches painted with the lotus, drawn as a pale green leaf with its seed pod, a detail we have rarely seen in Rose Medallion. Between them, black-bordered panels framed in a Greek key hold branches of prunus blossom, with tiny birds perched among them. The crisp black-and-gold key fret sharpens the softness of the pinks and greens, the way an ink line defines a watercolor. In Chinese decorative arts, the lotus symbolizes purity, the prunus, which blooms in the cold of winter, stands for resilience, the peony for prosperity, and the butterfly for joy.

Set it on a dining table or console to anchor the room, fill it with florals or let it stand alone as a spectacular piece of art. Not for food use, we recommend it for display use only.
