Antique Engraving | "The Footbath" after A.E. Plassan | Napoleon III Frame

$210.00

Some pieces carry their history quietly. This one carries a Légion d'Honneur.

This engraving reproduces Antoine-Émile Plassan's "The Footbath" — an intimate genre scene of two women in a richly appointed interior, one seated and attended by the other, rendered with the soft, luminous detail that made Plassan one of the most decorated French painters of his era. Born in Bordeaux in 1817, Plassan exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1846, won medals in 1852, 1857, and 1859, and was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur — France's highest order of merit — in 1859. His works are held by the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and the museums of Bordeaux, Montreal, and Reims.

The frame is as considered as the art it holds — a Napoleon III oval in black lacquer with gilt ormolu floral appliqués at the cardinal points, a scrollwork inner border, and a beaded outer edge. Wear to the frame is present and consistent with antique age, visible in photos.

Tucked inside every set, a little something for first time Tavola customers — a hand-finished vintage passport notebook. Note the piece, the moment, the person you gave it to. One day these pieces will sit in someone else's hands — and they'll know it came from yours.
